Tourism: The Path to Peace in the Middle East

On September 15th 2020, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed the “Abraham Accords”, a historic deal that would formally normalise relations between the countries.

The agreement has set in motion a burst of business opportunities and intergovernmental agreements between the countries, but it has also created exciting tourism prospects in the region for the first time in history.

Israel's first-ever commercial flight, carrying a high-level delegation from Israel and the US, landed in the UAE, while the first commercial passenger flight to Israel by a carrier from the UAE landed at Israel’s Ben-Gurion international airport in October.

Recently, the Israel Transportation Ministry announced there will be 28 direct weekly passenger flights connecting Tel Aviv with Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

While the deal allows for official dialogue between the countries, the opportunity for tourism also creates a chance to establish peace on a deeper level within the region, which can be achieved through engaging with different cultures, experiencing new places and investing in other livelihoods.

Seven Weeks after this historic agreement has been signed, the WTM have organised a momentous discussion among three of the Minsters responsible for Tourism in their respective countries.

Orit Farkash-Hacohen, Minister of Tourism for Israel, Dr. Ahmad bin Abdullah Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprises for the United Arab Emirates & H.E. Mr. Zayed R. Alzayani Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism to the Kingdom of Bahrain will be discussing about the tourism opportunities now available and determine the role that tourism will play in helping to secure long-standing peace in the region.
